How to Choose a Travel Stroller
If you are a frequent traveler or if your daily strolls involve a quick out-and-back stroll and lots of stops at the local park, consider getting a lightweight, packable stroller. They’re incredibly easy to fold and easily fit into buses, trunks, planes, trains and trains.
The Nuna Trvl packs down to a small size and fits in the overhead bin on most airplanes. It’s also very easy to put together and comes with great features like a simple, adjustable reclining seat.
Easy to Assemble
Like the name suggests, this stroller is designed to be easy to assemble and use. The frame pops open and folds with one hand, and the seat reclines in two different positions. The bumper bar is easy to replace and remove and the handlebar is comfortable and looks great. However, the lack of storage space means that parents will need to carry a large diaper bag or wrap it around the handle (against the advice of a professional).
This lightweight travel stroller has sharp turns and can roll effortlessly across any surface. It has bigger foam-filled rubber wheels than other models we tested which gives it a bit more bounce and a bit more stability. Some parents have complained that the tires are not durable.
The stroller is small enough to fit into the overhead bins on most planes and weighs under 13 pounds. Its basic design means it has few additional options, but it’s an ideal choice for frequent travelers. It’s important to remember, however, that strollers that fold up are considered “carry-on” baggage and could need to be checked in the event of a tight baggage restrictions.
If you’re a frequent traveler, it might be beneficial to purchase a stroller with more sophisticated features and a higher price. These models that are more expensive typically offer more storage options, like large underseat baskets, and are usually easier to assemble and fold. Many strollers come with adjustable harnesses, along with other safety features that you might not see on cheaper models. Check with your airline to determine what their policies are regarding strollers, and follow them to the letter. It is also important to read the manual for your stroller particularly the sections that pertain to safety. Make sure you understand how to properly use the straps and ensure they are secured. Also, be sure to only use your stroller in the appropriate speed and never leave your child unattended. This will lower the chance of injury if your stroller is accidentally tipped over or steers off course.
Easy to Fold
One of the most important aspects of an excellent travel stroller is that it folds down into an easy-to-manage compact package. Some models excel at this, like the lightweight JOOVY TRVL which folded down in less than four seconds during our tests and can stand upright when folded. This makes it simple to store and carry in the trunk or closet.
The UPPAbaby MINU V2 travel stroller is a lightweight, easy-to-fold stroller. It weighs less that 17 pounds and has an underseat basket large enough that can accommodate a large backpack or diaper bag. The footrest that is reversible can double as a handle when the stroller is in its collapsed position. This feature was a major benefit during our testing however, it also opened the stroller to damage by the airline when one of our editors failed to close the stroller when she was making sure the stroller was closed for her flight. The baggage handler snapped the footrest off and the UPPAbaby warranty doesn’t cover airline-related damage.
Unlike umbrella strollers, most of the other strollers we’ve reviewed use a variety of hinges and joints to fold into smaller, more compact size. The UPPAbaby G-Luxe, as an instance, folds down in only three seconds and stands up when it is done. However the button/ring combination can be finicky, and you have to make sure you are timing it correctly.
Consider how the stroller might be locked in its closed, compacted position. Some models require pulling down the handle or lever near the rear wheels while others have red straps that must be tethered. Refer to the owner’s manual for more information on the way each model’s locking system operates.
If you have a stroller which is difficult to close, you can use baby oil or WD-40 to lubricate all the joints and connections. If this doesn’t work you, you can call the manufacturer or a stroller service. But don’t force it; forcing a stroller that isn’t meant to be closed can cause damage or injuries to you and your child.
Easy to Carry
It’s important that you can easily access your stroller, regardless of whether you’re planning to run errands for a day or embark on a family trip. Travel strollers fold down compactly and are lightweight, making them easy to carry and transport. They can be tucked away in your car, or even in a closet at home. Some models come with an organizer bag that makes the process of transporting and storing them more convenient.
Before you pick a stroller for your travels, consider how you plan to use it. Do you intend to use it on roads, push chairs and Prams for plane trips, or in your daily life? The answer to this question will allow you to narrow your options. If you’ll be traveling with a child, look for a stroller with a car seat-compatible to save yourself time and stress. Look for a model with a larger rear-seat to provide more legroom and comfort if you have children.
Contact your airline to make sure that the stroller you choose can fit into their overhead bins. Many airlines will check strollers at the gate if they are too large to fit into the cabin. Others will take them to the hold if they exceed their baggage allowance.
If you plan to use your stroller frequently, select one with wheels that are less hefty and smaller than the wheels that are found on standard strollers. The smaller wheels will be more maneuverable and less likely to cause damage or puncture. You may want to add a pair of wheel covers to protect your wheels.
If you’re taking your travel stroller to the beach or other public locations in which it’s without supervision, purchase a lock to ensure it’s secure. Attaching a portable umbrella onto your stroller will give you additional sun protection. You can clip a utility bag onto the handlebar for doing your shopping without hassle or carry an aloe Vera bottle. Also, a set of carabiners in the front of your stroller is a great way to keep essentials like water bottles and snacks close to the ready.
Easy to Store
The best strollers for traveling are easy to maintain and to store. Begin by vacuuming the stroller thoroughly to remove any dust or crumbs that may be floating around. If stains are present the use of a soft cloth, mild detergent and warm water should do the trick. A toothbrush is a great option for hard-to-reach places. A damp cloth is enough for items that aren’t made of fabric, such as the wheels and handlebars. It is essential to lubricate these moving components to avoid rust.
Some strollers for travel, like the chit-chat stroller come with an area for parents to store personal items, as well as one or two cup holders. This makes it easier to carry your essentials traveling. Certain models come with a more extensive tray for parents that comes with slots for tablets or laptop. These features don’t just aid parents in staying organized, but they also reduce stress on long trips.
Another factor to consider when selecting a stroller for travel is its ability to fold and fit in small spaces, like an overhead bin on airplanes or on public transport. Many parents prefer strollers that fold and stored in a carry bag, instead of having to gate-check them with luggage.
Take into consideration how much space you have at home when evaluating strollers. A smaller travel stroller is the best option when you are limited on space. If you are planning to take the stroller on regular trips that require it to be carried by car or public transport and a larger stroller with better storage and everyday performance could be a better option.
Some strollers are available as part of a travel package that includes a car seat for children. The price is the same or less than purchasing the items separately. While this is a great option however, it is important to remember that the quality of the stroller included in these bundle packages often tends to be less than standalone models. We suggest that you think about these as a last resort.
