Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are great for walking around the neighborhood or jogging. Their compact design allows them to be maneuvered easily, even in tight spaces.

For a smooth ride, opt for a pram fitted with air-filled tyres. Look for models with a 360deg front swivel wheel. They are susceptible, however to punctures. Be prepared with an repair kit.

Sturdy frame

New figures show that three-wheeled buggies that were the symbol of the decade that had more money than common sense, are in steep decline. They’ve been replaced with four-wheelers that are able to handle a wider variety of terrain, yet still look swanky and being easy to push.

The larger the wheels are the more your buggy will be able to deal with bumpy and uneven pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear, make it easier to move and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tested this buggy with the newborn baby as well as a child who was 3 years old and found it very sturdy. It handled grass, cobbles and rough pavements, aswell as dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath wrote “it feels sturdy to push and extremely solid when traversing difficult terrain. The tyres, that are inflatable and require to be pumped up occasionally and have a suspension built-in. This was very comfortable for my children.

The size and shape of the seat is another thing to consider. You’ll want it to be large enough to accommodate your child’s comfort. You will also want it to be able to recline so that they can lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat that allows your child to lie flat and face you, whereas others only allow a face-to-parent one.

The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or wet walks. It can be used as a one-person unit from the beginning and can be modified to take two children when your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers until age four and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, a better 5-point harness and large padded seat unit. The storage options are great as well, with a large basket, zip pockets inside the hood, and a handy pouch on the rear of the seat unit.

Wheels with a larger diameter

Larger wheels give your buggy more stability when driving over rough terrain. This is ideal for buggies that are off-road. In addition, they allow you to maneuver the pushchair through narrow spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have swivel wheels at the front to assist you in navigating tight corners. Others are designed for running and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This can also help in the event that you hit a tree root or stray kerb as the front wheel can be lifted up to keep you from hitting it.

A majority of 3 wheel pushchairs come with air-filled tyres, which means they can be used on a variety of terrains and are far more adaptable than 4-wheelers. They are also lighter. However, they are prone to punctures, so you’ll need a repair kit, spare tube, and pump on hand.

Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and the Venicci Carbo lux are some of our favourite 3-wheelers. Both of these buggies have larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, “perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles” and can easily climb and descend kerbs. The buggies also have suspensions that, according to Kath “smooths out bumps extremely effectively”.

The downside of having bigger wheels is that they make some buggies quite wide and may struggle to squeeze through narrow spaces. This can be an issue especially if you’re using it to a jogger or you need to maneuver through doorways that are narrow when you’re out and about. Many models have compact folding options, which let you remove the front wheels and store them more compactly.

Easy to manoeuvre

One of the main benefits of a three-wheel buggy is that it is much easier to maneuver especially with a child in tow. They are designed so that the front wheels can be turned on a dime and are easy to move, making them ideal for challenging terrain such as cobblestones, parks, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3 Wheel Baby stroller-wheeler with her toddler. she reported: “The Terrain is a joy to maneuver on rough terrain. The swivel wheel in the front was especially helpful.” I was also impressed with how well it handled kerbs with the hand-operated break. It was very stable in the downhills or on a rough terrain.”

The only downside to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of the 3 wheel running buggy-wheel buggy may make it difficult to squeeze into tight spaces. This is something you should keep in mind if your home area is a city. If this is an issue then a 4-wheel buggy may be better for you.

MFM reviewer Kath found it to be able to deal well with grass and cobbles and it’s a good option for jogging with its lockable swivel front wheel that can be locked and air-filled tyres.

Comfort

A 3-wheel buggy offers the most maneuverability and performance when going off road. With perfect geometry, engineering and weight distribution this style of buggy can be able to turn at a moment’s notice and be a breeze to steer with just one hand. All Mountain Buggies pass the same rigorous stability standards and tests as buggies with 4 wheels.

The sport’s clever design puts the fabric sling seat inside the frame, instead of over it like modular seats. This allows it to have a lower center of gravity which means it’s easier to push, has a lighter curb-pop (you will not need to exert as much effort to lift the buggy’s hood over a curb), and offers greater stability and balance. And with the huge rear wheels that measure 16 inches, lockable swivel front wheel and tyres filled with air that require just a few pumps, you get smooth, bump-free rides over rough terrain, and a smoother more comfortable jog.

But that’s not the only reason to adore this buggy – our MFM reviewer Kath loved how spacious it is, too. There’s a large easy-to-access basket that’s surprisingly roomy for a buggy of this size and there’s a handy zipped pouch at the rear of the seat unit and even 2 smaller mesh pockets under the hood to keep your phone and keys.
